The first weekend in October features the Golden Eagle Festival and this was the whole reason for me taking on the epic journey from Cape Town to Western Mongolia. Altai Expeditions run by the Dagis family took care of all our land arrangements. Not only are they well connected, but also well respected. They arranged a two-day stay with an Eagle Hunter for us and a side-trip to the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Our guide, Shoka, handled the arrangements for the special permits required to visit this area. Winter arrived early which brought on terrible wind and sleet resulting in flight delays and cancellations. This meant that our time in the Altai was unfortunately cut short and we could not do a trek to view the Potanin glacier. We did see some of the best preserved petroglyphs though. My highlight no doubt was the couple of days spent with an Eagle Hunter. They were inviting and kind. Very special people who work hard making a living. We spent a good couple of hours trekking up the mountains on horseback with the hunter and his eagle.
